Hi guys,
Currently I have GPS off by default. Whenever I use Navigation, it prompts me to change the option in the settings. I do this, then, I hit back, then I hit Navigation again. Alternatively, I use my GPS widget and turn it on, then open Navigation.

My question is: Is there a smart way to click on Navigation, then Google figures out it needs to turn on the GPS, and then when I close navigation, it will turn off the GPS once again. Or alternatively what do you guys do instead?

I only use the navigation service where it's helpful (namely, in the car). I therefore always have it plugged in to my cigarette lighter charger which is plugged in to my car dock. I.e. not using any battery.

I think if you're using the navigation for something where you're not going to be able to plug it in then the gps toggle widget which comes standard on one of the left screens is your best bet. If you use this feature a lot then it might make sense to move it to your home screen for convenience sake.
