That's strange I would prob do a battery pull.....if that doesn't work then I would take it off the charger run it completely dead and then charge it all the way till it reaches full befor you unplug it. And then if that doesn't work I would bring it back to verizon and let them know and see if it maybe a defect in the battery
Some reasons why this would happen:
- you're using it a lot as you charge it
- you have it plugged into a computer instead of using the wall charger
- you are using a long or defective USB cable
- you installed some crazy app that burns battery
- you are in a very poor connection area
- phone is busy syncing a lot of contacts/email/etc.
- defective charger
- defective battery
- defective phone

Both my D2G and my D3 did/do that. It only happens when I have the phone charging on my computer. It makes sense that the computer would provide a crappier charge.
That said, I wonder if the op's real problem was a defective charging cable.
It wasn't the cable, used many cable that all work fine on all my other phones. And I never, ever even hook my phone up to my computer. Not to transfer media, or even to charge it. The store tried charging it with their cable and it still wouldn't take a charge....like I said, D.O.A.
