To change the battery icon in the notification bar you're probably going to have to root your phone and flash a custom ROM which features a different battery icon or a theme that uses a different battery icon...or... there are themes and apps that you can install that will give you a different battery icon with out flashing a ROM. If you choose not to root, and it probably is not worth rooting just to change the battery icon, there are apps that will install a different battery icon but will not replace the stock icon...you'll have two.
