It does have the right GSM frequencies in addition to CDMA and LTE, it also can be used abroad on GSM networks. But Verizon is somehow blocking access to the US GSM networks. Hence my question whether anybody has found a hack to do this.
There's a way to do it, just a matter of finding what's blocking it, could be the radio itsself or something completely different, I've manage to get it to catch on att network once on boot there's tons of different threads on this subject

Its all good, bionic users who stay on gb doing the nv edit can use gsm carriers in the states and global not sure about being on ics for them tho, but the reason for that I believe is the bionic was made somewhat like the d2g and droid pro, gsm for droid4 and droid razr on att will be trickier everyday I'm trying something new to get it working, so are other users I believe it can be. done tho
