after phone update some of my photos in the gallery are gone

After a phone update I couldn't view my pictures then I turned my phone off and when I turned it back on the pictures were gone. Did I do something wrong, can I retrieve them or are they lost forever?

Try browsing the contents of the sd card with your computer. Possibly still there but for some reason droid's gallery app isn't indexing them.
