A really silly question?

New person alert I feel kind of like an idiot asking about this.. but here it goes. I've been browsing forums, and many people talk about their phones being rooted (?) I have no idea what this means. It would be great if somebody could explain this. I'm trying very hard to understand how the droid pro works in it's entirety, thanks in advance

Rooting is the same as administrator rights in Windows. It allows you to access and change all aspects of your phone. Manufacturers make doing this difficult for warranty and copyright reasons.

Someone explained it VERY well with an analogy!
Think of a house with a basement...everything that makes the house operate is in the basement (circuit breaker, water heater, furnace, etc). You can't go down there though because the door is locked. "Rooting" simply unlocks the door.

Great analogy! Except in our house growing up, rooting unlocked the pantry where all the good stuff was
