2 phones active?

I'm planning on upgrading in January. However, I don't want to give up tethering, nor do I want to pay $20 for it (thx VZW!!! >< )

Is it possible to have 2 phones active to the same account/ph#?
Odd question, but let me explain.
We'll likely have a tablet of some kind by this time, and I'd like to have the ability to easily have it tether to my phone - for those times in the car, etc. Since I'm planning on getting the (insert latest phone here), chances are there won't be a way to root it early on. And, I may just leave it as factory.

I'm rooted on my Eris and wouldn't being able to take it along on trips, etc, just for the tether (free) function.

That would be a no. You can have two phones on the same account but they can't have the same number.

You could of course deactivate one phone and activate the other but at the same time? Nope, that won't work.
