I am running the Z4root and it has said "running exploit in order to obtain root access" for a while. I rebooted twice, but it just keeps saying that. How long should it do this for? And what should I do?

It should work just fine. I too have 2.3.340 and had no problems other than having to try to root on my second try

Shouldn't take longer than 2-3 minutes. Are you rebooting after it hangs, before you try again?

What do you mean after it hangs?
I let it run for like 8 minutes and it does nothing so I do a battery pull.
Am I doing something wrong?

Try pulling the battery out for a minute and put it back in and try again...did you download the correct z4 root app for your phone too? Another idea might be to delete the z4 root app off your memory card and redownload it again.

No that's ok, though simply pressing home and powering off should suffice. Where did you dl'd the apk from?

There isn't a Z4root.apk specifically for the DX.
