Hold the X down as soon as you turn it on. I never had an issue getting it into recovery mode if I did it that way.

Are you not getting the white triangle with the yellow arrow?

Hold down 'X' before ever pressing the power button. If you wait until the screen starts to power up before pressing 'X' the normal boot process will have already started.

Continue to press the 'X' key until recovery mode has booted.

Ok first of all press the x button BEFORE pressing the power button. Once the triangle thing shows up then you need to press the volume up button and the camera button at the same time, both of which are on the side of the phone. This should take you into recovery mode. In the future you will only have to press the x button and power button to get into recovery unless you go back to stock and decide to root again.

Get the D2 bootstrap app, it will boot you right into recovery with the push of a button.
