What exactly does it do when I boot my droid using the X key method and choose to wipe the cache partition? Is this safe?

    ok.....

first off, what you are doing when you boot holding X is booting you into recovery mode, from here you can flash custom ROMS and make and restore nandroid backups depending on the version of the recovery youre using. when you select to wipe the cache partition you are wiping any cached web pages and the likes, the cache also store data fom apps that access the web that are running in the background such as your google search. wiping your cache is perfectly safe. just be sure you dont format (wipe) your data because that will delete all your apps and personal data. feel free to pm me if you have any other questions

Is cache where programs store their data at? I think it might be, but I'm not sure. I think it would wipe all settings/values your apps have saved.

Just tried it and NO it doesn't erase your App settings or values. Its safe. Noticed it freed some memory too according to Advanced Task Manager app.

I recommend a full backup before you wipe anything... just in case.

good call, i think everyone should say this before telling anyone, anything is safe to do. regaurdless how "safe" it looks, and plus its just good practice. ive got a 8g sd card just to keep all my backups on:)

Wiping cache does nothing harmful to anything. Maybe you guys should read up on what cache is. :p All app data is stored in /data/data/
