Will my TBOLT work in S. America

My father and I just got a tbolt earlier this week.. Both loving the experience..

He is leaving to South America/ Brazil today. He was wondering If he should bring his Tbolt or just his blackberry..

Any advice, suggestion. or actions to take for the phone to work properly..
he is thinking about turning off data all together and use wifi to check email when he has the time.
