I am considering switching my plan, but I have a question on the data part. I want to be able to use data on my Dinc while I am in canada for google maps and other things.

Obviously I need to add a data plan, but will I be able to use data in canada?

I thought the data plan for $130/$230 was for USB cards for laptops.

I checked again and she said that I will not incur any extra charges for data while in canada or extra charges for texts, but will for picture messaging and also for voice.

I also chatted with an online person

Please wait for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience!
A Verizon Wireless online pre-sales specialist has joined the chat. You are now chatting with ShaNeal
ShaNeal: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
ShaNeal: In an effort to better assist you, are you an existing Verizon Wireless customer?
You: I am interested in a Nationwide Plus Canada Family SharePlan® 700. If I add the $29.99 for my smartphone would I be able to use data in canada for no extra charge?
ShaNeal: I will be more than happy to assist you with this inquiry today.
ShaNeal: You would not be charged data usage while using this plan in Canada.
ShaNeal: I have not heard from you for a few moments. Would you like me to keep this chat session open for further assistance?
yes I am: I called and I was told on my current plan that if I travel to canada I would incur no data charges but I would incur roaming voice
ShaNeal: You would not incur any extra data charges but you may be charged for roaming.
yes I am: also I was told no text message charges either. but I would on pictures.
yes I am: I keep hearing different things from different people
yes I am: I don't know what to expect.
ShaNeal: One moment while I check these charges.
yes I am: thank you
ShaNeal: No problem.
ShaNeal: I am showing that you would not incur any extra charges for texting or data. You would only be charged extra for picture messages.
yes I am: hmmm. That is good to hear. Thank you for you help.
ShaNeal: Are you looking to purchase a new phone today.
yes I am: No I already had service, but I was looking into changing my plan when your window popped up.
ShaNeal: No problem. It was my pleasure to assist you with your inquiry on service in Canada. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

tracerprix - That's good news! I looked for the Canada plan on the Verizon website, but couldn't find it.

I'm curious, though: If you are "data roaming" within Canada (and, by "data roaming", I mean not on one of the companies that Verizon has a data agreement with), couldn't you still get hit with big charges? I'm not sure if there are carriers up there that don't have agreements with Verizon, but I don't know for sure.

Hmm, I know my dad is transferring CALLING plan to international when we go up. They said we'd have to pay a lot of money to get texting there though? I'm so confused.

Hi - I'm in the middle of a vacation to Canada and checked with VZW before I left and did lots of searches on the internet for answers. I was told to make sure that ALL data stuff was completely turned off and that I could use WIFI without incurring any charges. So while at a family members house, I've been using their WIFI, while keeping my phone in airplane mode. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE BUTTON FOR 'DATA ROAMING' or it will automatically look for a network to sync. (I caught a text message that came in and quickly turned it off.) I turned off auto sync, background sync, everything....put it in airplane mode and using wifi. I can manually refresh and sync with Google Voice and GMail and all is well, anytime I want. I wasn't planning on making phone calls, so I'm not much help there.

Hope that helps someone.....

If I just turn the mobile network off will that be enough? Because I CAN make calls up there. I just want to shut off data

Just for some info to people:

For the 10 days in Canada, for 12 dollars, we were able to make our phones keep everything we have (unlimited data, calling, texting). The ONLY thing we don't have is picture msging and txt msging!

Was it 12 dollars a day or for the whole time. Also, I do not understand when you say "keep everything we have (unlimited data, calling, texting)" and then say "The ONLY thing we don't have is picture msging and txt msging!"

Is there a difference between texting and txt msging?

Oops, I meant to say picture messaging and video messaging! And it's around 12 total. a little over a dollar a day. I found out that we didn't change our calling plan though. So, I only have data and texting.

Sadly the resort I'm at has zero signal anyways... At least I have wifi and skype!
