I have an older 1 TB Time capsule, which apparently doesn't have a dual band radio. According to Apples Website, the dual band radio is a NEW feature. I don't have the capability to set up separate SSID's. So those of us with older Extreme's or TC's are SOL.

Your timecapsule and other airports might still have the option to limit what type of band they broadcast. Try limiting it to just n or just g and play around with the settings.

I wish my router (Netgear WNDR3700) was as configurable as yours. Mine is dual-band, but the 5GHz signal doesn't reach throughout my house, and the X can only do 2.4GHz.

I set my 2.4GHz band to "54 Mb/s max" (was set to "up to 300Mb/s", now is in 802.11-G instead of N mode) and the consistent almost immediate disconnects vanished.

While 54 is a lot less than 300, my laptops usually said they were connecting at like 130, and 54 is still 3x as fast as my internet connection, and probably faster than I'm likely to get transferring files / streaming video with 5400 rpm hard drives and the overhead introduced by various OS/software layers for anything but synthetic tests.

That said it still makes me angry that I have all these other devices hobbled due to my X, and I am hoping that they fix it soon.

    A medley of issues

After reding this thread I think I have experienced most if not all of these issues. I was encouraged to read that some people have swapped out their droid x to solve the problem. So I tried it. Not only did it not work for me it actually got worse. I now have two phones and have tried every wifi setting under the sun. NONE of them work. I've gone from N to G to B to a combination of all of the above. I've tried TKIP and WPA and WPA2. The new phone can't hold a connection for more than 2 minutes. At least my first phone worked for 5-10 minutes. The first phone wouldn't always shut down the wireless connection, the data transfer would just stop. With the second phone I lose the connection altogether. If I try to watch a youtube video I can't make it through a single video before it stops working.

Lucky me I also have the dancing signal bar issue with both phones. My signal strength sucks. I hop between 3G 2bars to 1x zero bars constantly. If I try to download anything over 3g I get network errors. Living in Atlanta this is unexceptable. I've spent hours on the phone with Verizon and to their credit they have tried as hard as they could to fix the issues.

Before anyone suggests a router issue - I have 5 other devices and they ALL have no issues whatsoever (iTouch, 3 different laptops and one desktop). I can sit my iTouch next to my DroidX and the iTouch will stream YouTube all day long. The DroidX craps its pants after 1/2 video.

I love the functionality of this phone. I JUST WISH IT WOULD WORK!!! I've got about 2-weeks left on my 30-day trial. I hope the push a fix before my time runs out.

Before you give up, try once more to put the router in G mode, 54Mb/sec max. Reboot the router. That should fix it if you're having the same issue that many of us hit. Even if you're sure you did it right before, it's just a bit of work that may leave you delighted.

When it connects to wifi after that what does the connection quality say? Fair or better?

Zamslam, thanks for the encouragement. Here is an update:

I have the following settings on my D-LINK 655 (latest firmware)
    - 802.11 g only
    - Wireless Channel 7
    - Transmission Rate 54 (use to be set to Auto)
    - Security Mode WPA Personal
    - WPA Mode: WPA Only
    - Cipher Type: TKIP

For the first time I was able to play 4 youtube vidoes in a row without my wireless connection closing. However, on the 4th video I got this message (which I've seen many times).

Sorry, this video cannot be played. There was a problem while playing.

I'm not sure what this means because my wireless remained active and working. Any clues?

When I was debugging I would use the speed test app from the android store. It would tell me objectively when the connection was ill. It would be useful for you to be able to differentiate between a YouTube and a wifi problem. Your wifi signal didn't show "poor", (under settings | wifi) right?

No - my wifi signal is very strong. I downloaded the speedtest as well and all shows well there. There has to be something internal within the phone. I will be downloading a file from the marketplace and it will make it through a portion of the download and then say 'paused'. It will sit there for a minute or so and then continue (all the while my wifi connection is up and strong). It will then proceed as normal. I suspect when youtube runs into this you get that error. I believe I've even run the speedtest when the download 'paused' and the speedtest was fine (could be wrong here - I've done so much troubleshooting). I also get the well documented 'Network Error' when pulling data as well. I could have a strong 3G connection and get this error. It occurs over Wifi or 3G. It's almost as if the phone forgets what it was doing and gives up.

Well, at least my wifi connection doesn't appear to be dropping but the end result is the same.

I too am having data issues. tried multiple set-ups on wireless router. Phone connects for a little while, then does not work on wifi. So i then switch to 3g, which works for a little bit, then becomes very flaky (despite being in a full, strong 3g coverage area). My blackberry does not have problems with 3g here at home, so it is strange that my Droid X does. Even my wifes Spring phone gets decent 3g. The more I mess with this, the more I think it goes beyond a simple "wifi" issue. Seems like a data issue somewhere within the device itself.

I say all this having been in the cellular industry previously, so I am not completely unfamiliar with ruling out specific problems. I really like this device, but am starting to get frustrated with the data situation it. No, I have not called tech support. They will have me reboot, then eventually want me to reset. Reset does not resolve this issue. Not interested in replacing the unit, as it is obvious that doing so won't necessarily resolve the problem, and I cannot stand the notion of having to rebuild my phone for no reason.

Will be curious to continue to follow this on here, to see what experiences others have. It's a shame that something like this is tainting such a great device.

My latest saga. I just learned today that my second phone (haven't returned the first one yet) has the external speaker issue. About 20% of the time I get no sound (or very little sound) coming from my external speaker. I miss calls, can't hear someone on speaker, very quit audio when watching videos, etc. I'm losing confidence that Motoral has even tested these devices. I have two phones and neither one functions to an acceptable level. I've got to get at least one of these back in the mail to get it off my bill. That leaves me with a less than ideal phone. Is the 3rd time the charm or should I give up on the X (and Verizon) altogether?

I very disappointed with the WiFi speeds on the X. I haven't had any trouble maintaining a connection, but then again I haven't used the wifi enough to establish anything in that regard. What I have done is a number of side by side tests with my Droid 1. And regardless of whether the my router is outputting in mixed mode, greenfield, B/G/N, G/N, or N only, the speeds with the X never come close to those on Droid 1.

Just out of curiosity I found a work around to get my wifi working on N. First turn on airplane mode, which kills your cdma antenna. Next re-enable wifi and run another test and see if it fixes the issue. I go from 56k speeds to 3mbps standing in the same spot.

While not an ideal way to use your droid I think it proves that it is a phone issue and not a router issue as some suggest.
