    Hey all,

I used to think that WiFi used less battery since it wouldn't have to try to connect to towers/servers. But I've seen a lot of settings about turning WiFi off when screen goes off etc.

So does using WiFi use more battery than 3G?

More talking here about while idling or not using data, not like during a big download or something.

WiFi uses more if you are not near a WiFi source, but if you are (like at your house) then it won't use as much as 3g data.

If it is idle it will disable automatically with screen off (but you can change this in WiFi settings).

    Thanks man.

I never turn on WiFi when I am not going to connect to a network, and turn it off when I leave that network.

So if connected to a network... 3G > WiFi for battery usage
If not connected to a network ... WiFi > 3G for battery usage

    Is that right?

So will it only disable WiFi if it is NOT connected to a network? Or it disables WiFi when screen is off regardless if it is connected to a network?

If you are connected to broadband through WiFi on your Droid, it is saving battery, AND it sleeps if it is not being used while screen is off.

If WiFi is on when you are not connected to a broadband connection, it will scan every 15s for networks in the area, thereby wasting battery doing nothing.

If you are rooted, some ROMs increase this value to 90s, but if you never turn it off, everytime the screen is turned on it will scan every 15s(90s).

Wifi uses less battery than 3G when actively transferring data. 3G uses less when idle. That's why the default setting is to disable wifi with the screen off.
