When will someone get this going?

If it's rocking the Palm, this should be a no brainer for us.

I know it's possible with rooted phones but I'm not that smart.

I think they are doing that on the Palm handseats, since they are not selling very well.

The Droids have sold well, and I bet Droids probably already have the highest data usage on the network, or at least mine does lol.

Rooting is super easy, Droid-life.com has great videos on it, its really just running a program.

You can get a connection over usb or bluetooth with PDAnet, which is available in the market.

I think Verizon needs to do a commercial with the droid putting out a wifi signal of it's 3g. Say a droid users and his buddy are out and about. The friend has a iphone and can't get coverage. Being the nice friend, the droid user pulls out his droid and says " I have an app for that" . Lets his friend use his 3G connection where AT&T doesn't get coverage.

But then they'd have to let everyone do it. And they were pretty dramatic in taking all the Wireless Tether Apps down. It could happen though :) I hope it does. Would be a great commercial!

There are tether apps for the droid already available in the market. They come in both wireless and USB forms, you need root access for wifi tethering I believe but not for USB.

So the technology is there but there hasn't been an app designed to do it without rooting?

That seems like something that devs would be highly motivated to get going on. I personally, would love that ability (primarily for the kids who both have the itouch).

you don't need to be rooted for wifi tethering. There's a free wifi tether app for non-rooted users called "Barnacle. "It works great!

It is for rooted users only!
You just don't need any specific ROM to use it.

Barnacle says you need to be rooted right in the download.

    Question, though:

Why is it that only rooted phones have the wifi tether option? Is there something in the software that prevents this?

    Just curious.

The rooting and wifi tether are not hard to do, at all. Just do some reading. I was nervous before I did it, but it was the best thing I did for my droid. I use the tether constantly in the car. Droid in the cradle and I use an ipod touch to check email and respond. I have had two laptops and an itouch running off the droid tether at the same time. I have no idea if there is a limit to simultaneous connections.

I was going to root and then 2.1 happened. I know you can turn back to 2.01 and then root but now I'm thinking that I'll just wait for the 2.1 root dealy.

Bottom line, I don't know my arse from a hole in the wall when it comes to this stuff.

Does Google Voice work with a rooted phone? That is a deal breaker for me.

    Thanks
