My Droid is already awesome why root? All I've seen rooting do is change the appearance of a phone...what else can it do?

Ok but what does that do that my phone can't already do? And what's all this clocking business?

Overclocking and underclocking refers to cpu speed. Droid stock runs at 550mhz, although I think with froyo it gets to 800mhz. Overclock you can run it up to 1.2ghz. Much faster phone then.

In the end Rooting is about unlocking your phone potential. In and of itself it does nothing. But it gives you access to your phone system to make changes as you wish. Its about choice.

jstafford1 summed it up the best. I rooted my Droid 1 and one of the reasons I did it was I wanted the ability to remove certain apps from my phone that I felt were taking up space. Also thee were a whole variety of apps that you can access while rooted that can't be used in a stock phone.

Having said that I've elected, at least at this time not to root my D2. I would like some of the apps back but I don't feel the D2 needs overclocking and since I took the 16 gb card off of my phone and placed it the D2 i have lot of of room available. So I probably will do it some time in the future but not right now.

Please don't shoot me, but how exactly do I root my phone? I'm sure there is a guide on here somewhere but I'm at work and don't have time to look out up. I was thinking about doing it so I can take screen shots.

There are several how-to's available on this site.
I have included links to a couple but these are by no means the only resources available, Just the ones I found. You can also find a how-to in the stickies of the Hacking Help section where you posted this thread.
Also several members here have links to guides in the signature (at the bottom of their posts)

As I mentioned above these are by no means the only resources available just the ones I found by looking quickly.

Welcome to the forum and Have Fun rooting!

@ Ghost of Sparta ALL of the links given in this thread are for the Droid 1/A855 phone. That said, DO NOT USE THEM for your Droid 2 A955 phone!
