Hey everyone... Noob here, but I did successfully rood my Droid and I'm running Smoked Glass 6.0. Thanks to everyone for keeping such great instructions here on how to do it without bricking anything.

My question is, what exactly is a kernel? I see a lot of posts talking about different kernels and applying different kernels to various roms, but what is it? As a second question, how (or why) would you change it?

    Thanks!

You really should do some reading, but basically, it's the lowest level of software before hardware. It's the portion of the OS that handles drivers and hardware control and access for the rest of the OS.
