if I downloaded a update.zip file, like a custom ROM, and went into recovery mode on a non-rooted DROID and did the install SD Card update.zip? Just a curiosity of mine.

A non-rooted (stock) droid wouldn't typically have SPRecovery or Clockworkmod installed, so there would be no way to install an update.zip file.

If SPRecovery is installed via RSDlite, then a rooted ROM can be installed (via update.zip) without issue. This is exactly how I rooted my phone.

The stock recovery app would do a checksum calculation and fail unless the update.zip was an official from Vz or Moto. The first thing the app does is the checksum to see if it is a vaslid update.zip file from Vz or Moto.
