I'm ready to jump on the rooting but I am the type of person that enjoys learning things of this nature with a guinea pig so to speak. So my question is which phone is the best candidate for this endeavor purchased used from eBay? I don't have a ton of extra cash laying around but I figure 50 bucks or so.

I'd vote for the Incredible (original). Unrevoked makes rooting mindless and there are a variety of ROMs to choose from.

EDIT- didn't read the $50 part. Are you planning on using this phone for service or just playing around with?
