What is rooting??

Hi, I am new to the Droid world.. And I dont know what Rooting is. Can someone please explain it to me?? Thanks!!

Simply gaining access to the "root" or core files of the os, particularly the system files which in turn allow you to flash roms, overclock, and wifi tether without a fee and manually delete bloatware such as amazon mp3, kindle, blockbuster etc.

This is something that the phone manufacturer doesn't want you to have access to, voids your warranty, and has the community in an uproar.

Google has no problem with rooting, heck, I think they even allow the nexus phones to be rooted with their own software. And now thanks to the fcc, rooting/jailbreaking is legal. Just be careful and read up before you do anything because with that warranty voided there's always a chance of ending up with a 500 dollar paperweight.
