What is causing screen to go dark?

When i try to do my unlock pattern to get into the phone, if I do not do it correctly the first time, screen goes dark. I have to hit power button again to get it to come back on. Also, when I make a call, before it even gets to the 2nd ring, the screen is going dark. Not sure if Locale is causing this or not.
Suggestions?

Get Screebl in marketplace.

After the update I noticed the screen goes dark from the lock screen much faster than before, like in about 5 seconds. Screebl won't help, as it's not active when the phone is locked (I just tried). I don't know about when making... if you're holding it to your face the screen should go dark, but if you're on speakerphone or handsfree, I don't know what that's about. Screebl could potentially help with that.
