Does it stand for something? I have seen many "cooked ROMs" available for various phones but I still dont have a concept of what a ROM actually is. Can somebody give me an explaination? This is something that I have not been able to really understand.
    Thank you!

ROM stands for Read Only Memory. ROMs in this case are new looks to your phone and can make it do things your stock phone can't do.

You will have to root your phone to install any ROMs.

    ROM- read only memory.

its basically a way to modify files normally UN modifiable. such as the framework allows you to change it to crate a special theme. anyone can make their own ROM(not the same as the ones provided) by adding and removing things they want or dont want from the stock build. its a matter of time skill and the guts to try new things.

If for any reason you mess up your phone with ROMS, will Verizon's warranty still be valid?

Hope this isn't a dumb question.

It is NOT a dumb question. Yes, it voids your warranty, but it's generally possible to return your phone to stock if you want to take it in.

There are several reasons to do root and add ROMs:

    1. Able to do things like Wifi Tethering
    2. Change the clock speed of the CPU
    3. Customize to your liking.
It's like a car. You can keep it stock or you can "soup it up." That being said, I haven't done this...yet.

Changing the clock speed will make the Droid operate faster. Looking at Overclocking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

    Overclocking
is the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) than it was designed for or was specified by the manufacturer
    .

I haven't rooted yet, but I believe you can get an app called SetCPU for rooted Droids, which will change the clock speed from 550 up to 1,200.

Well, I understand there are ads on Craigslist for people who will do it. I'm pretty sure I will do it on my own. Lots of people here to help. You just have to read and read and read.

SetCPU is only a manager so to speak. You need to flash Overclock kernels
to your rom then set speeds through SetCPU

basically setcpu allows you to manage how fast the kernel lets your droid run at. the higher the kernels speed the more you will be able to overclock.
