Noob question alert.. just rooted for the first time and stuck in a ROM where nothing works

I have a Droid 2 that came with Froyo 2.2 and then I believe I got the update to 2.3.something last fall. I just want to get my vanilla Froyo OS back but keep it rooted.

The current (super-buggy) ROM is based on 2.2.1. Can I download the "update" for 2.3.something in zip format and get my Froyo that way? I saw that somebody posted the link to this update on a forum. Or do I have to install Froyo 2.2 (or 2.2.1) and then upgrade from there?

Also why is it so hard to find a plain boring ROM for Froyo for the Droid 2, and why isnt there a site that aggregates all these ROMs? Seems strange that I have to tunnel through hundreds of forum posts and use links to shady third party websites to download ROMs... it's not like I'm downloading a prostitute or something
