weird signal/data lose

I get full.. bars and can stream youtube from my basement. how ever when I come up stairs I get all most nothing. I was thinking about getting some type of booster..?? I don't know.. I talked with Verizon plenty of times.
well.. just wondering if I was to flash a custom rom.. are there some or maybe one or even none that would help with data and cell reception?
