Same here, DX and a D1 sitting in the closet, so I'm not too worried. I just find it to be amazing that he read it back to me. He was more or less like "don't bs me." haha.

Not really that amazing. The device is probably just reporting some Version Number variable or string. Just about everything does this these days. Obviously they need to have a way to tell what image is running on the phone to determine if an update applies and things like that.

Maybe the ROM makers should figure out what string is being reported and just leave it like it is instead of changing it to "Das BAMF 2.1" or whatever.

It could also be because of the build.prop file which essentially tells your phone what its running as far as os, build number, etc...besides it makes sense, if they had no idea what your phone was running then how would they know whether to push you a certain update? I.e. upgrading 2.2 to 2.3 os? And obviously it is a bonus for tech support being able to better help more quickly and easily

So the overall conclusion is make sure you have a back up of the system you were running and return to stock before calling in? I kind of this is crappy, because how do you know they won't flag people for being rooted and send them a cancelation of the warranty?

I always sorta assumed and suspected this. I mean, they would have to have a way to look at what version you were running over the phone, right?

"John, you are not using the latest update. I want you to try and update manually by selecting software update. What? That doesn't work? The best thing for you to do is take the phone to a tech specialist at your local Verizon store in order for them to update it for you, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I'll credit your account $50 for your troubles".

It would be interesting if ROM and kernel managers started "cloning" the default version numbers so this wouldn't be so easily noticeable, and then created a "toolkit" (already done in my ROM's) that showed you what version custom ROM you were running.

I wouldnt think so..I've called in several times over the last few months and I've yet to recieve anything..of course that still don't mean we haven't been flagged anyway and VZW is just waiting for us to try and return the phone.

Don't know about that either, I've been told by vz reps that if I need my phone replaced to flash back to stock and unroot...also I know a few vz reps that have rooted/rommed phones themselves and if Verizon really cared about rooting/roms I think they would've said something to those reps about it

How is that crappy, you/we know we are voiding the warranty when we root the phone?

I think there would be a massive HR issue if VZW was looking into it's own associates personal phones, and then approaching them right away, don't you... as for looking at customer's phones it does make sense for when you call CS that they would be able to help you much more quickly by knowing what your phone is running

Or call the 1-800 # from a landline?

The guy did not say his warranty was void. He said he could not help him. That would be akin to a chevy owner driving into a Ford dealer and asking for warranty work. If you run the factory ROM then Vz can support it. But if you run someone else's ROM then you need to see that ROM maker for support.
