I call VZ support - they say it is the VPN servers issue. I tried to explain I am not seeing GRE packets from the 3G network, told them it works on wifi connections....

whatever. Suck me Verizon.

EDIT - and before I get abused for criticizing the beloved carrier, I was screwed around for over 2 hours on support, their best answer was to call motorola, or to use wifi. I asked why am I paying for the "corporate" data plan and asked about cancelling, the cancellation fee is the same as paying until the end of contract. This has been the worst support experience I have ever dealt with. Dell is looking golden to me right now.

I have had some troubles in the past where D-Link routers will not pass VPN GRE packets, no matter what the setting. Probably something set (or incorrectly set) in their network routers. Problem is finding someone there who really knows as much as they think they know.

Amen Brother! If this were not a phone that was bought for me from my employer I would say the same exact thing John! I could not agree more with your analisis they just have not figured this out yet! I think if they actually put the right person on it they might just be able! What I do not understand is why is this phone listed as VPN capable when it should say VPN capable ONLY through WIFI...........Especially when sold to corporate type people..

Joh if you keep up the pressure on your end I will do the same here in the North East eventually one of two things will happen,A}They will figure this out or B} The I Phone will appear and with any luckl be as capable as it is on At&t! Only wish the powers that be would jump that way...

After one more escalation, the issue was fixed last night and I was able to connect. Unfortunately it was just a temporary fix and it is no longer working. Since I know no other changes were made (firewalls, VPN server or Droid device settings) I am fairly confident the problem is as expected on VZ's 3G network. I am willing to bet they are trying to block illegal tethering.

Hey John Yea I wouldn't doubt it but what amazes me is they are willing to have corporate type people go elsewhere (At&T)rather than get on the stick and fix the issue! Keep after them John maybe between the two of us we can get them to do what they should and make a good phone set a great hone set! I tried to connect this am an d the message kees saying the server hung up. Is it possible that youare behind a fire wall?????No Clue! John what application are you using (once conected)to connect with? I'm using Pocket Cloud the free addition...I

PPTP VERIZON VPN SOLUTION!!! <---Must read!

Solution to "Server hung up you might be firewalled..."
Overview
OK Here it is, this took 2 hours of yelling and pushing them over and over to do their jobs. Once I showed them their own Tech support forums were full of people with this problem they started to listen and get it together!!!

History, about 2 months ago I reported this problem to Verizon I was blown off and told they would open a service ticket and an engieer would look at it. When I contacted them yesterday no ticket was created even though I was given a case number of 100917-004303. I've learned I didn't yell enough and was too easy on them my first call. They are forcing us to be uncivil just to get them to do their dam jobs!

After moving past a few techs and managers I got the key that was need.

All Verizon Mobile Broadband accounts by DEFAULT(<-- Bull****) are under a General Restricted IP block. This means all general IPs are firewalled by VERIZON ISP!!! Now verizon still thinks they only sell phones and voice services and will not admit to being an ISP or support and service complaints, bugs or horrible company policy like this.

Now everyone will ask WHY NOW? I've had a PDA phone for 10+ years and I've never been firewalled or had a blocked port problem from my phone. We used PPTP VPN's for a while 2-3 months before this problem started. I asked this question given it's a Federal Crime to access and change my voice or phone account with out my expressed permission. Since this happend on my personal and 3 of my clients accounts I know no permission was given. The verizon manager said this has been this way all along and no changes to my account have been made. (I call verizon Ignorant and this is abusive)

I will be contacting the FCC about this and filling a complaint please make sure you do as well and CONTACT ALL TECH FORUMS AND TECH SITES ABOUT VERIZON FIREWALLING AND PORT FILTERING THEIR SERVICES!!!

LET ME BE CLEAR!!! The person that you talk to is reading a script and the script says WE DO NOT SUPPORT IN ANY WAY VPN's!!! This isn't a VPN issue nor is it a SONY, APPLE IPAD, HTC, MOL... problem this is a VERIZON ISP FIREWALL problem.

HOW TO SOLVE!!!
They would not provide me a service ticket number for you or an email you can contact.
Business and enterprise verizon clients:
Contact your Business Sales rep and request/demand all your cell phone numbers be removed from the General IP restricted block. This block is managed by Cell Phone Number so all your phone numbers will have to be given to them.

Personal and Small business without rep:
Contact Verizon Data support, Demand to talk to a manager/resolutions department, once you get this far tell them you request/demand to be removed from the General Restricted IP Block! Don't let me tell you this is a VPN settings or they don't support VPN's in-fact they block them by default.

Once they do this you MUST *228 option #1 then reboot phone. Once done you will no long get the Server hung up you might be firewalled error.

This was tested on HTC incredible 2.2, Mol Droid 2.1 and 2.2
Please comment results here and on my Primary Blog for this problem.
Don't Panic

Tank you and please be kind of direct with the Verizon staff, you are the customer and they must listen to you.

I will also be filling a corp complaint and will post the complaint # for others.

So it is as simple as a friggin port being blocked! Man these people kill me! They have been telling us all kinds of things that we really didn't buy for one minute! I have been calling our corporate salesman over and over and have been keeping the pressure on time ever since we have received the then new Droid Inc. In fact I called him 2 weeks ago and he flat out gave me the same BS story. Then I checked with our IT GUy and he told me flat out it is being blocked by Verizon period! He war extremely adamant about this so I had to believe him. Anyway I have pretty much told all of these people the same thing that you are saying and they pretty much chuckle about the situation and tell me the same thing they always tell me! Oh and by the way I am always kind and very polite, but it does not get me anywear! Lol! Last time I flat out made a comment that the will loose corporate customers if this is not addressed very soon......

Update! Well after much cajoling I have finally got the Data solutions to admit that there is a General pool that they keep these numbers in and they are saying that they do this to protect individuals from unsolicited packets. They are willing to unblock but I'm not sure what to do with this one?? I don't want to end up with viruses if this is what they are talking about?? Please advise Cyber Axe.

Well In wanted to update You All on this situation, which is still a very BIG situation for me!). Well here is where I stand I had contacted my corporate sales Agent and he told me that he would forward my concerns to there It Specialists and they did. Well this person contacted me and said that she would look into it. Well I waited, and waited and when she finally got back to me she said that it was doable but I would be exposed to unsolicited packets and possible unwanted contacts?? Well I said go for it I'll take the chance? So I waited and waited and I am still waiting?? This is weeks now and to be honest I am done waiting. Where can one go to get a definitive answer from these people? Honestly I just don't get it simple stuff, all they needed to do is to remove our numbers from the unrestricted Ip list..?>/???Wow very frustrating! I'm beginning to think there may be a whole lot more involved that they are not telling me about???

I e-mailed my rep and asked them to contact Verizon and remove my phone number from the Restricted IP list and it was taken care of within 24 hours. once i was informed that it was removed, i tried to VPN in and it worked fine.

Well, we have this problem all over again with the 4g network, the VPN works fine when my Thunderbolt is on 3g, but 4g is blocked. My Verizon rep tells me that the nomenclature to unrestrict the 4g seems different.

Since this is a different network, I guess that makes sense... Working on it now.
