So I was looking for a vehicle HUD app.

I didn't really find one that was satisfactory for what I was looking for. Dashboard Plus was close but still wasn't everything I wanted. Partially due to layout and design.

So my question is to you...

If you wanted to have a HUD (Heads Up Display) for your car that displays items on the screen what would you want (i.e. speed, heading, distance travelled, time)

Of course Google Navigation works well and I am not trying to duplicate it. This is more for those trips where you know where you are going or don't care but still wan't something up on your Droid while it's in the car dock.

I am not trying to duplicate the functionality of Car Home either. That serves it's purpose quiet well as well.

Also I am brand new to Android programming and haven't written code in years so I figured this would be a good project to cut my teeth on.

This will be a free app or the lowest price option available. I hate paying 2 bucks+ for a one trick pony.

Also any help and good directions are appreciated.

And hey if you want to do a mockup and post it I will take it into consideration.

And if you don't think this is worthwhile or think there is no use for it let me know I don't want to waste my time.

I'd been interested if it mirrored the display, then I could read it from the reflection in the windshield...

There's a speedometer app called Speed that gives you that option.

A speed widget would be a really cool feature if you move forward with this.

The problem with the speed widget (assuming you meant on the home screen) is that it would either be on all the time thereby sucking battery like it was going out of style because it would constantly be pinging or searching for GPS.

Or it would be a something you need to turn on. If thats the case it would take just as much effort to open up a new program. I am thinking about adding a button for radar that would detect your location and then bring up the NOAA Weather Radar for your area.

More ideas guys! I am already starting the ground for this app too.

As far a mirrored display...how does that work? I didn't think car winshields or the droid was the right combo for that...

Speed, heading, distance travelled, elapsed time, altitude (for no particular reason) and weapons remaining onboard (to remove the car in front of you).

One thing I would love to see would be a traffic app.. I would love to see that integrated.

    Did someone already mention weather?

I was thinking the same thing a while back.. but since I've never coded, I wouldnt know how to start...

The best layout for me would include speedo, heading, music interface, and time. those are the basics that I would like. and I'd happily pay for that. Im not opposed to others additions, but would be careful not to overcrowd it.

how easy would it be to build a blank slate type thing, then all these options would be written as plugins that could be placed in whatever position each person wanted? Kind of like a second home screen with widgets? does that make sense?
