Updating apps through apk

If you just install a newer version apk of an app, will it simply update the app and retain whatever info you currently have in it? Or will it be like a fresh install and start with no info in it? This is via astro btw, not through the market obviously

good question - id like to know the answer to this as well

it seemed when i installed the new swype it erased the settings i had stored previously but i cant say for sure

most apk's will just update the app and retain the settings.

Yea just found this out, prompt will come up and ask you if you would like to upgrade the app. Good to know from here on out

It will depend on the app coding itself, if poorly coded it will install and wipe, if better, then provisions are made for updating.
