It's like every other big company, the economy is down so they raise there prices, less product more cost, The fleecing of America, the cereal companies did this less product in the box, but the box is the same size, it's cheaper for them to give you less product, then to make the box smaller, it's all about the bottom dollar!

Will they ax it if I continue to pay full price for my phones?

After you are out of contract all bets are off. You have no obligation to them and they have none to you. Who knows what they will do in the near future. But you can count on unlimited coming to an end for everyone at some point. As I said target date of June 28th 2014. That is when the last of the people who renewed will be out of contract.

If any of you are wondering why I edited these recent posts, there was a botched quote tag that carried through a bunch of replies and had the wrong name showing up.

I think all should be right now...

Hmmmm A glitch in the matrix.

They would be changing the terms of the existing contracts which would open up a big can of worms. Everyone would have just cause to get out of their contracts free of charge.

They will get rid of unlimited. It is coming. But it will be after the last of the unlimited contracts expire.

Target date: June 28th 2014

Of course, in that same contract is says that VZW is free to change it at any time. And let's face it, the number of people that would actually follow through with leaving is smaller than the number of people that would just accept it. When the time comes, VZW will make more money from the new plans and prices than it will lose on the few people that actually leave. They still come out ahead.

We also have 4 $30 plans and use under 2GB. Still not getting hopes up that this will put a dent in our enormous monthly Verizon bill, there will probably be some reason the bill stays the same.

.

As predicted the increase per month from $10 per additional smartphone to $40 exactly erases any savings from the shared data plan

It's all about the subsidy. Rather than tick-off customers just eliminating it outright, they come out with new plans that appeal to a small % of users. For the rest that wish to keep their more affordable plan, having the "choice" of giving it up for a subsidized phone is more palatable, at least in theory.

It will be interesting. I expect to see a dramatic reduction in what VZW pays for subsidies. Although, about half their users are yet to step-up to a smartphone so maybe not. But if I was one of those, a single user and on the fence, their plans are not affordable for me to dive in. I have to imagine they have a large portion of single users for whom it is now unaffordable for them to get a smartphone on VZW. That likely would be where they see large losses of customers. Or perhaps VZW has done the math and determined that net-net the data plan really only costs these people $30 (or less) given unlimited minutes and texts for $40.

This is a way to make money on both sides.
Reduced subsidies = cash on the bottom line.
More $ for data = cash on the bottom line.
Either way they win.
If you buy a phone at a discount they make up the balance. So if the phone is $649 retail and you get it for $199 there is still $450 they need to make up.
If your bill for data is $30 is takes them $450/30 = 15 Months to make up the cost before they turn a profit on data.
If you buy at full retail they get don't need to recover the cost. and start making money on the plan immediately. This is one reason they dumped annual upgrades. I would get a new phone every year. They never made money on the plan in that situation.

With the new plans they get higher money for the data you use so they get into the black faster.
It's all about money and they will either get it from you by forcing full retail or higher rates.

Yep, just the beauty of capitalism in action. That was sarcasm, capitalism isn't beautiful, its ugly. It was fine back after the war and stuff to get things rolling, but maximizing profit by any means necessary doesn't work for this country anymore. Nothing but hypocrites would say otherwise.

We as United States citizens prefer to be slowly bled as opposed to cutting off the limb right away.

Unsubsidized phones + plans that remove the subsidizing extra cost = cheaper.

But we prefer the more expensive route because it FEELS like we're saving money. When in actuality it's more expensive.

Don't blame capitalism, you can choose another carrier. With communism or socialism there would likely be one carrier and it would be expensive and the service would suck!

That would be fine if the rates were actually cheaper, but they are not. If you look at T-mobile you can actually get cheaper monthly plans when buying retail phones! (looking better all the time!).

Did you mean T-Mobile offers a reduced monthly rate when buying full retail or did you mean that when upgrading your phone at a retail location like Best Buy you get a lower monthly rate?

Actually, starting tomorrow (06/14 and 06/15) you can get ANY 4G LTE phone T-Mobile has for free with a new 2 year plan. You can get 2 gigs data, unlimited everything else for as low as $29 a month.

We are living in a Mixed Market economy nowadays anyway :happy3:. In this type of Market, Corporations can do what they like in setting prices by paying its employees accordingly. Why? Without some sort of balance/buying power, your products render useless. That's today's problem, lack of buying power within the community. In Pure Capitalist, Companies survivability depends on its costumers base and doing so by marketing their prices competitively. As times move on, humans get smarter. We can't survive by basing on this method only, for this is why we stole something about socialism. People Power! We use this power to stop collusion, corruption, and etc. In modern day, Corporations give signals to Mass Media about their plans (Verizon and AT&T). Plans that now are used by rival competitors to set the price accordingly instead of competitively. A greedy Idea sets in where they think that since they are the sole provider of such market and we are fenced by limitations set by them, hence they can toy around with us. This can't be allowed as there are so many wages disparities in workplace (wages sets by Brains Vs. Brawns). This is why we need regulation and something that we need to do immediately to stop Wireless Corporations in leeching our pocket dry! On the other hand, pure socialism equal to lack of brilliant ideas. It doesn't mean that you are dumb from born if you live in socialist community, but it just that you will be more inert as an individual due to lack of incentive for the invention(s) you made.

I'm not going to bluntly say Socialism suck! It just that remember that not all raw materials can be obtain locally. This type of living is also set as reminder to rich people that depend their high-live style in capitalist society to always listen to the majority.
