How do you get rid of unwanted/unused apps? I've drug them to the trash can, but they remain on there.

There are a few ways, but you need to be rooted.

be careful in "deleting" the unwanted apps, as when an update comes out you could be scrambling to find these apps you deleted.

The better way is to root your phone and get root explorer or through the adb shell - rename the .apk files to .bak - then if an update comes. you just need to go back in and rename them again to .apk.

Yes, that will remove it off your screen but it doesn't take it off the phone so it's still there using space.

I say make a list of what you remove from your phone. I'm not sure if the RS has a list of .apk's for the X, I know they do for the D2 and you can simply reinstall them when an update rolls around.

Well, since no one else has asked, I guess I will...

Exactly what "unwanted apps" are you referring to? The stock apps that came on the phone from the factory such as City ID, BlockBuster and the like, or are you talking about apps you downloaded and installed and now want to get rid of?

If its the factory "bloat apps", then I suggest you take the advice above and just rename the files so as they do not function but are still available for later updates to the phone.

If it is stuff you downloaded and installed, then there should be an uninstaller that came with the apps that is available by way of ---> Settings---> Applications---> Manage Applications...there you will see 4 tabs up top (Downloaded, Running, All and On SD Card)...choose the Downloaded tab, then select each app you want to uninstall by tapping the app...there you will see an "Uninstall" button...click it and the app will be uninstalled.

As far as Rooting goes...there are several ways to accomplish the task. So far, the easiest I have found is located here----> [APP] z4root - xda-developers
I just used this method about 20 minutes ago on my Wifes Droid 2...

    Unwwanted applications

I'd like to get rid of some of the apps that came with the phone and some that have been downloaded. Going to that "root" page doesn't have anything to download and I don't have a clue how to change the name of the files..............can't find an option like that on the apps ............

There is a .zip file at the bottom of the first post in that thread...you can download it and run from your pc, or you can just go to the Market and download the app straight from there. Search for z4root by RyanZA...its free.

Download root explorer from the market. Navigate to system ---> app. Then delete whatever you want, but some of those apps may be essential to have so if you aren't sure just rename it and add .bak to the end of it
