Also the reason i ask is because i really want to be able to get the ICS update but i dont want to brick my phone, so can i still download the ICS update when it comes out even with root, by simply unfreezing all bloatware or is it more complicated or even possible to do with root? Also does anyone even know when the update is coming out?

So, has anyone tried the Droid 4 utility? Did it work? I would try, but I don't yet own a D4. :(

I'm curious as well because I want a back up plan if I ever root my D4. Also, what happens if you root your phone, maybe messing with something or flashing and your phone goes into a boot loop? Since you can't take out the battery, would the hard reset with the combination of the power button and volume buttons save you from the boot loop?

i wouldnt say i bootlooped but i did have a scary situation. i changed somethings in safestrap <backing up and reinstalling wrong rom> so i booted up and the boot logo came up then screen went black and i waited for a couple minutes and waited and waited and waited< i had a full charge on the battery> so after a couple hours the screen was still black i tried resetting it and it didnt work. well finally a day and a half later the phone died and i started to charge it and it got to 15% i turned it on and got the boot logo then black screen then safestrap. i was so happy. i was able to wipe and install my old rom and booted back up and it worked.

That is scary! That's what I'm afraid of. So you literally have to wait for the phone to die to reset it hmm. For now, I'm not gonna mess with roms and will just root the D4 and keep stock on it. You think I'll be fine and won't boot loop?

I dont think you will have a problem if you follow the directions. but there is always a chance. be careful and read and understand what you are doing before you do it.
