Unresponsive Droid

Twice my alarm did not go off in the morning. The green light was blinking but my droid was unresponsive. After reading the posts I did a battery pull, which allowed me to turn on the phone. Is this typical? I had ATK for a day but removed it after reading the posts. Could it be the auto-sync?
I love this phone but I can't trust it if it randomly becomes unresponsive.
Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Does a factory reset reformat the SD card?
Have a lot on there so I thought I'd ask before I do it.

What about application data?

I need to make sure that it's not erased...
