unread messages, missed calls on home screen, without home screen replacement?

Is that possible. I know that launcherpro and adw launcher will do it. But I have tried those and wasn't a fan.

So I wondered, is it possible to have the default home screen show the number of missed calls or unread messages without the home replacement screens?
