First thing would be rooting the phone. If you haven't already done so, go Google z4root root apk. Its an app that will root your phone for you. Instal it and use it to root.

Once you're rooted, if you plan on flashing a new rom, there are a few essential tools you need. First you'll without question need to grab the droid x bootstrapper. You can find it in the market for $2 or on the developers website. Next, since flashing a rom requires a data wipe, you'll want to grab titanium backup. It will allow you to backup your apps and data to more easily and reliably restore them. The free version works but the paid version is easier and more comprehensive. Then the optional apps include SMS backup and restore for getting back your SMS affter a wipe.

I havent used a computer once for anything droid related. All you need it for is sbf flashing if you screw up. Other than that you can do it all in phone.
