I'm sure this is answered on here somewhere....but I've searched and searched and can't find it.

Is there a way to download apps to my laptop then install them on my phone from there via usb cable?

I'm using a original Motorola Droid, un-rooted. I'm in a country where i have no service. I have Astro installed.

Thanks in advance.

If you have the apk file for the app on your laptop, you can either take the phones sd card and copy and paste the file onto it. Then on your phone find the file with free app liek astro that lets you look through your files and tap it and pick install.

Other way is email the file to yourself and open it on the phone.

I usually do the first way.

Ok so I don't have to convert the apk file to anything else before I put it on the sd card? How do I know I've got it on the sd card when I'm dragging it from my laptop over to my phone?

You run the .apk directly on your phone. You'll know it's on your SD card because you'll see it! Use a file explorer and just navigate your sd card, find the .apk, and open it from there.

If you haven't, you have to change your security settings on your phone to allow installing from .apks though.

There are also ways to transfer the app from PC to phone without using the USB cable. These include:

Awesome Drop: (Drop the app onto the web page and it is copied to the Awsome Drop folder on your phone's SD card (folder name is drop)
http://http://labs.dashwire.com/drop/android

Drop Box: Move the file into your dropbox on the PC and it is transferred to the cloud You get 2gb free storage. On your phone you can open dropbox and request it be downloaded to the dropbox folder on your SD card.

SugarSync: Move the file into your SugarSync folder on the PC and it is transferred to the cloud You get 2gb free storage. On your phone you can open sugarsync and request it be downloaded to the sugarsync folder on your SD card.

ZumoDrive: e the file into your Z: drive (ZumoDrive) on the PC and it is transferred to the cloud You get 2gb free storage. On your phone you can open ZumoDrive and request it be downloaded to the ZumoDrive folder on your SD card.

ZumoDrive - Robert Milk has invited you to join ZumoDrive

They all work great; I use at least one of them every day. Good Luck with whatever method you choose.

REmilk....I'm assuming I need service to be able to use any of the options you suggested. Like I said....I am in a country where I have NO service on my phone.

I tried changing my settings but no love. I think there might be something wrong with the app I am trying to move. I have a new cable coming and I'll try to load a different one when it comes in.

Thanks for the help.
