Thanks. If I understand correctly, these latest 2.3.4 SBFs are not currently rootable and are therefore mainly useful for folks who've applied the latest official 621 update (and probably bricked themselves with the wrong SBF).

good point, that is correct
if you want to be rooted, don't flash these
if your phone is bricked, these are your only option, right now

For the sake of clarity... (Re: .621)

I stupidly installed the OTA update on my Droid 2 to Gingerbread system 4.5.621, which AFAICT still cannot be rooted directly. This version seems fast, stable, with good battery life (well in the <24hrs I've had it anyway) so I'd like to stay on it, but I also really want root.

  • Will the ISOs posted in this thread let me revert (e.g. to 4.5.601)? And from there can I get back to .621 (this time with RootKeeper)?
  • Or, is there an equivalent to the .604 Milestone X, except for Droid 2?
  • Or, should I try another route, like restoring a Nandroid backup? (I have one for Froyo and another for a Cyanogen nightly)

I don't want to follow one mistake with another, or mess up the radio or anything.

I ask because I found this thread via 1KDS' .621 info for Droid X (in turn from Goose306 at DroidXForums). Thanks in advance! Great info here already.

Have you been able to find an answer to this yet? I too have installed 621 before realizing that it cannot be rooted or downgraded. Does this ISO work to take a DROID 2 version 4.5.621.A955.Verizon.en.US back to froyo? Or does this also brick the phone? I have not tried anything after I mistakenly downloaded the 621 SBF file offered without warning on XDA forums. Guess I should have read the entire forum first since they could not type out a simple "Do not upgrade if you want root". I am hoping to be able to go to froyo, then install the 2.3.3 update from zip, root it, and then block the 2.3.4 621 update. Thanks for your help!

I've been reading everything I can find about the 621 update on Droid 2. The consensus seems to be that NO, you can't downgrade at all (especially not back to Froyo) because 621 has a signature on the system code group designed to prevent downgrades. So far nobody has hacked it (to my knowledge). On the Droid X there's a long workaround to downgrade and root (see what I posted previously regarding Milestone X), but nothing for the Droid 2 yet.

The 4.5.621 SBF in question IS the official Verizon system image. If you soft-brick your phone while trying to flash another ROM, this SBF will restore you to 621 exactly as if you had taken the OTA update (so you'll again be stuck on 621, but at least your phone will work). It will take time for the firmware hackers to reverse-engineer it (hopefully there's enough interest and they haven't entirely moved on to newer phones).

vinylfreak89 on RootzWiki seems to be actively working to root 621 on Droid 2, though he's looking for help since he doesn't actually own the device (he used a friend's). There are rumors that people have kept root using RootKeeper, but only if the set it up before the OTA update. Unfortunately that doesn't help us until someone can figure out exactly how it works.

My intentions were to deploy the (1KDStaz_D2_2.3.20.iso) and go backwards to Froyo and then root.
If I read this right, you cannot SBF back to Froyo or an earlier version of Gingerbread if you have the latest OTA (D2) right?

Mine says 4.5.621.A955 - I assume that is more recent and the same still applies; there is currently no way to root and I cannot SBF back to an older version??
