Thunderbolt Display Process consuming battery suddenly

Recently my thunderbolt has been draining its battery within 5 hours. This was not a gradual degradation and suddenly just started about a month ago. I used to be able to use it for at least 12 hours with no problems at all and still have 30+ percent battery life left. I tried a few things by changing some of my settings (via suggestions through this forum) and reducing the display brightness. I recently traveled and toggled the Airplane Mode on/off and now the same problem has surfaced again.

Any suggestions outside of ditching this phone?
