Im thinking about rooting cause im tired of waiting for the update, i have searched around and there a ton of threads on rooting so i figured i would make my own.
Ive figured out how to root. but havent done it yet, im scared of bricking my phone.
how do i back up everything on my phone?
do all my apps and contacts stay on my phone after rooting?
    what is busybox?

Apps are tied to you Google Account, you may have to reinstall them, but you will NOT have to purchase them again.

There are many backup apps, I use MyBackup

    1) Dont know anyone yet who's completely bricked their phone. It's a pretty robust thing. There's a nuclear option called an SBF restore, that basically will do a fix-all and restore your phone to it's out-of-the-box state if something get's really borked.

    2) Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro will backup everything, you can also use ASTRO to backup just your apps, as well as various SMS backup tools to backup your messages

    3) Nothing changes just by rooting your phone. If you flash ROMs, you may lose your apps and contacts, but rooting alone shouldnt do this. Contacts are backed up to your Google account if you have the sync setup, and apps are tracked in the market app, in case you need to get them again.

    4) Busybox is an implementation of the standard Linux/Unix commands. It allows you to navigate and function in the command line environment provided by Terminal Emulator.

Yes, SetCPU is a paid app. You will need to change ROMs to overclock.

If you're not familiar with Linux and Unix and command line functionality, then Busybox wont mane any sense.

    Your choice with MyBackup

use DM Updater to root your phone it will root install busybox and the recovery stuff for you then install a 2.1 rom like Bugless Beast or Simply Stunning

    DO NOT
Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro when moving from 2.0.1 to 2.1 as it will restore stuff to your data folder that will just cause stuff to break

I was in the same position and successfully rooted my phone with DroidMod last weekend. If you haven't already, watch the three part instructional video series by Droid Life:

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...questions-here-video-droidmod.html#post254380

I'd suggest watching it all the way through beforehand so that you know what to expect as you go through the process.

My understanding is that it's actually pretty tough to brick your phone. Go for it, be sure to purchase the SetCPU app (a whopping 99 cents) and enjoy! :icon_ banana:

root reffers to the start of of something in this case your SDCard no a folder in your SDCard

and the one for Bugless Beast does not use Metamorph

have you already used Nandroid to install the rom though?

the easiest way to do it and its very simple

Download Droid Mod updater run it let it do its thing but stop at the before installing droid mod or just let it if you choose droid mod well your pretty much done then :)

if you want BB or another flavor you download the rar file unzip the file into a folder on sdcard called /nandroid/BB for example

reboot holding x hit wipe data then go to recovery advanced recovery and select the folder you just made and you are done

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully you or someone else reading can this particular noob understand.

I rooted with DroidMod and am using SetCPU to control overclocking. I'm also running the Helix launcher and love it. I'd like to play around with the "look" of the phone and use the "smoked glass" style icons that I've seen around the forum (is that called Adamz?). Is there a simple way to do that or is it an involved process where I have to change a lot of stuff around?
