The usefulness of these apps is not in question for me. My problem is that textplus by gogii causes my phone to freeze and lag so badly that I'm forced to do a battery pull multiple times throughout the day. So I thought "ok...its just a poorly designed app, ill look for another one" so I uninstalled it and found textfree. I worked a double yesterday, so I was unable to touch my phone at all, and if I don't touch my phone that battery will go down by 20-30% at MOST from 10am until about 10pm. I felt my phone was really warm on my leg, I felt it through my pocket, so I looked at it at about 6pm and it was down to 15%. Textfree is a battery killer. And not only does it kill my battery, but it causes my phone to freeze and lag badly as well.

Does this happen to anyone else with these apps?

Im not using them as a replacement for the built in texting on my phone. Im using them under a very special circumstance where I need to text someone from a different number.

There is a story behind it but it is personal, it is a legitimate reason though. I'm not using it for pranks or mischief of any kind.

I was just wondering if anyone that has used these apps has similar performance issues

Why not text via Google voice? Do you have a text plan? If so, Google voice has SMS and allows you to have a seperate number. Atleast I'm pretty sure it does but I only use it for calling Canada.

GoogleVoice will disclose your GV phone number if you text someone.
    TextPlus will not.
I've been using textPlus for a while with no problems.

Either of the above are great if you don't have a texting plan with your phone service, but be aware that there are some short numbers that both of the above can't send text messages to, but the regular carrier sms can.

GOGII, Inc makes textPlus, POPtext and swifText.
POPtext looks like an improvement over textPlus, but is a little sluggish.

    Tried TextFree too.
It was killing my battery life.

And the Carriers will never tell you about the free text messaging apps that use your wireless data instead of the carrier's SMS, because they want to sell you a text messaging plan that ranges anywhere from $0.20 per message (yikes!) to $20 per month.

    SMS - what a ripoff.

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/globalText?contentType=Legal Notice&textId=122

Then there was the OZ Instant Messaging client for aol, msn and yahoo that came pre-installed on some Windows Mobile phones that would fool one into thinking Instant Messaging uses the unlimited Smartphone data plan, when it actually routes all messages through the Carrier's SMS network, and you get stuck with a huge bill if you don't have a text messaging plan...

textPlus Gold (v4.0) is free in the Amazon Appstore today.
textPlus Free (v2.5) from the Android Market is what I had been using.

    I still use textPlus Gold.
A little sluggish, but I can get and send text messages for free without a text messaging plan, and without having to disclose my real phone number or Google Voice number (which is great!).

I haven't tried textFree under GB...
    worked ok under Froyo.
