Tethering Won't Work PLEASE HELP

I have a rooted Droid 1 & for some reason I cannot tether. When I attempt to it says USB not connected when the USB is of course connected & I do not choose the SD card option. I attempted to check the tether when I chose SD option upon connecting USB & it said appropriately that I cannot tether when SD connected. But When SD not connected for some reason it is not reading USB please help.

Have you installed the drivers? Which rom are you running? Is it the built in usb tether for the rom? Which version of windows are you running?

Answer all, please.

Windows XP
UD 3.0
Tether built in
Tether was working & just stopped working ; reinstalled driver & ROM no change

Thank you. It might be related to windows xp, as I had the same problem using the built in usb tether though on a different rom. Tyr this:

And just for kicks, the other day, I had problems again, but found that my WiFi on the phone was on and that prevented me from tethering.
