I have cancelled home inet because I tether 100% of the time.

I also have a laptop mount in my truck (ie - like a cop, even though I'm not a cop)

I stream

I download music off youtube

hell, I've even been known to tether porn

lots of tin foil hat wearing folk in here

booo whoo. I refuse to double pay for the same internet because you feel guilty. Knology should be the one's that are pissed right now, as they are the ones that lost money.

I wanted a droid phone because it consolidated everything I needed....
camera
video
phone
text
GPS
email
home phone
and yes....

internet.

I will also be looking into how to tether it to my Wii shortly

If this bastard had a cable tv tether, I'd do that too

mcat -

I couldn't agree more. I used to use a flip phone for voice/text and bought a laptop with a VZW aircard embedded. I bought the Droid for the same reason as you: to consolidate all my communications. Plus, I hated having to open my laptop everytime I needed to check email. Dumping the aircard only meant I had to go find a Starbucks or some other place with WiFi everytime I needed to get onto the internet. I tether frequently, but do keep a close eye on battery and phone temps and try to keep the session lengths as short as needed so I don't fry the processor.

According to my attorney golf partner tethering isn't illegal, and I think the stories about thousand dollar tethering charges from VZW are bogus.

not using available tethering is akin to keeping and paying for a home phone because you don't want the VZW to realize you are taking advantage of their unlimited talk plan.

lets fear monger and tell people that cell phone companies will cancel you if you talk to much on your cell phone. So therefore, continue to pay for your home phone so you don't have to use the celly as much as you need, to keep the cell phone company off your back.

Remember, if everyone uses nothing but their cell phones, even when they are at home, instead of their home phones, then you may overload the network and get spotty service for those who need to use their cell phones...... way to ruin it for everyone else....

don't use your GPS because a garmin can do that already and verizon might get mad because you are using a feature on their phone they can't charge for
don't use your camera because Kodak can do that already and verizon might get mad because you are using a feature on their phone

in fact, it's probably best you don't check your facebook status from your droid either, just to be safe.

good grief, look how stupid that reads..... but yet, people have made those arguments for why you shouldn't tether

For all the fear mongering.... I have yet to see one scanned bill that shows $1000 in fees for tethering, I have yet to see one scanned letter of cancellation due to "overusing an unlimited account that's not really unlimited"....... post that up, I'll listen

I'm gonna let this one go, since it's like talking to a wall. But I will end with saying this:

No one's claiming tethering is illegal, but it is very much spelled out in your Terms of Service that doing so without paying Verizon for their Mobile Broadband Service can get you hit with penalties, and canceled contracts. It hasnt happened yet, but if you think VZW doesnt know who you are, then you're living in a fantasy world.

The way a lot of you are abusing the tethering privileges, part of me hopes Verizon begins to crack down on it, because they're coming after the big users first. Those big users would be you all who believe they're entitled to do whatever they want on Verizons network because they have a Droid.

Have fun.

lolz - how petty.... "I pay for the same thing 2 times, so I hope they go after the ones who use their phones to it's full capability"

Like Verizon isn't selling their landline business in 14 States because it makes too much money off of it. They are retracting to a cell only company in all but the NE. No wires to maintain, smaller work force and many people are just dumping landlines. Frontier Communications will most likely fall on their face and even more people will switch to just cell phones.

Bandwidth on the cell network is much easier to add.

#3 Use wifi tether and not the wired one. there is no way for them to prove you were tethered that way.

#4 the stuff the op posted is just fear mongering. there is no way they will enforce that on a large scale. not profitable. not worth the bad pr.

#3 is just plain wrong. Tethering requires encryption and proxying to be hidden. Wired/wireless has nothing to do with this.

#4 How do you know? If you use a lot of bandwidth when you tether then you are using much more of VZ's resources than they want. You are not as profitable a customer. Of course they want to cut you off. Of course they want to charge you by the MB. I'm not sure they are hunting tetherers, but I want to know how you are so sure they aren't.

THEORY WHY WE HAVEN'T SEEN SCANNED BILLS FROM BUSTED TETHERERS: perhaps VZ threatens to sue if this is done.

I'm not making excuses for anyone. What if you're wrong and you're the one pushing the myth? I just want to know the truth. I don't pretend to know all the answers. What does VZ do today and what they'll do in the future? Maybe someone out there knows.

This got me pretty scared , I just showed my VZ bill to a friend today , man I don't want to go to jail :( , hope my friend won't rat me out to them , I'll call him tomorrow and let him know he can have my PS3 just so he won't tell nothing about this .

Anyone who can't see the difference in using your unlimited talk plan, and tethering isn't worth arguing with.
