I followed the instructions on this page AllDroid - View topic - How to tether droid in Debian/Ubuntu and it is working. I'm posting on my Ubuntu laptop via my Droid. YES!!!!!
It was a little tricky but I got it done. Just read the instructions twice, maybe thrice and execute to the T.
