tether/hot spot

    do i have to root my phone to do either of the above?

    No and yes. You have to root to have access to the hot spot part of it (the work around). Though there are a few programs you can use to tether your phone via a usb cable, but if you want to wireless tether it you will need to root.

    You can actually tether via bluetooth with pdanet
