Total noob and I'm really trying to grasp all this root/mod/rom/theme stuff so I just thought I'd try to clear this up so I can understand a little more fully. I think I get the concept of root access pretty well. I used the RSDLite, SPRecovery method and everything went off without a hitch so I think I'm really comfortable up to the point of having a rooted phone with a working Nandroid backup. Now I'd like to experiment with different ROMs, but I just want to know what I'm in for. Assuming the flash goes well and the phone boots up normally, what will I need to do at that point. Will my apps still be there? How about my contacts, email settings, speed dials, etc? Am I basically starting with a new phone out of the box? If that is the case, how do I go about getting all of my contacts back (i'm assuming i just sync with Gmail?) and getting all of my apps to be there. I tried Sapphire just to see what happens and I didn't even have a Market icon which really threw me for a loop. Sorry to be such a novice here, but I'm really trying to learn more about this stuff so I can love my Droid even more than I already do!! Thanks in advance for your help!

Get titanium backup and nandroids after you get a stable working ROM.

I'm in my fourth week of being rooted so I'm right with you!

Titanium is an excellent app and well worth the few dollars. By Nandroids do you mean making a SPR backup in the nandroid folder?

Yeah Mike, once I've used the ROM for a little while ( depends, could be an hour could be 3) I reboot into sprecovery and make a nandroid with a custom name so I know which one is which. I do the kernel the same way.
