Today is a sad day for Droid Modders and Flash Addicts alike. Team Cyanogen Mod is saying that none of their developers will buy a Galaxy S4 and the device will not be supported. The team has not been happy with Samsung since the days of the Galaxy S2. The main reason they are deciding to totally reject the device is the fact that Samsung refuses to release source files in their entirety which makes hacking the phone more troublesome than it would be otherwise.

"Nobody at Team Hacksung (the team behind Galaxy S2, Note, S3, Note2, G Tabs... official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, [and] the bugs we have on the S3 will probably be there on S4, too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes Qualcomm releases sources, but Exynos sources we had were far from [working on] actual Galaxy products. I'm pretty sure the same will happen for this one.

That's a uniform "no" from us."

This can have pretty large implications on the Mod community as many of the custom Roms that we use are based on CyanogenMod. The Galaxy S4 promises to be just as successful as the Galaxy S3 which means there will be millions of these devices out there. Im sure it will end up with some CM ports even if it doesn't end up on the officially supported list for Cyanogen. It is highly likely that one or two people out of the millions will want an AOSP rom enough to build it, and share with the community. We can't be certain of that though.

What are your thoughts? Will you run out and buy a Galaxy S4 on day one knowing that CM will not be supporting the device, or will you hang back for a bit and see what developers come up with? TouchWiz is probably one of the best OEM skins to have to wait it out on in my opinion.

it does not matter to me because I do not use cm ROMs due to my love of Samsung motion actions. I do feel bad for those who do like those roms though.

The S4 looks good to me but the overall hardware changes tell me to stay with my S3. I want it because I'm a nerd like that and just want it, my pocket has the overall vote though. I do hope some devs out there will get on board though and get CM running on it for those who buy it.

CyanogenMod's post from G+
Let’s start with the simplest form of this: CyanogenMod does not pre-announce support or lack of support for devices. Ever. Even for the Nexus 4, we did not announce support until a nightly build was available. Further, any announcement regarding the ‘dropping’ of device support will be communicated via this Google+ page, Twitter, Facebook, our blog, or a combination of those; it will not be something buried in a forum post.

This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.

As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.

Yea I liked TouchWiz motion actions also, until I tried a ROM without Touch"HOG"Whiz, will never go back to a TouchWhiz ROM, my phone is super smooth and fast, TouchWhiz is nothing but a HOG. My next phone will be a pure Google phone. Here is the Rom I am using right now [ROM][OFFICIAL][4.2.2] PAC-Man ROM v21.0.0 [AOSPA + AOKP + CM10.1] (3/13/13) - xda-developers

As if the S4 looking like a troll weren't enough reason, here's another =p

It's been bad enough dealing with lack of development on my Moto; no desire to repeat this on my next device. Also, did I mention that it's ugly?
