I noticed my system/app folder in root explorer only has 36k free left of storage. Is this normal. I know the folder has all my apks in it. I tried theming my helix launcher but it won't let me put the file there to do so.

That can't be right unless you've moved most of yours apps from /data/app to /system/app, I have about 28mbs free.

That could be correct, why not? Maybe you have a lot of apps downloaded. I woudl look into apps2sd to clear up space... or if you want to theme something, pull the apk, delete it from your phone, and push in the new one (suggest doing this in recovery with your system mounted)

It's all the stock apks in the folder. 140mb used 36k free. Really puzzling to me.

Are you running Cyanogen by chance? A themed version specifically.

The space isn't just in /system/app/ is is the entire system partition where you are lacking space. Some ROMs and themes fill up the system partition rather well, making theming things a pain. A filled up system partition isn't a problem though, well if you want to theme it is. But as far as performance goes, it is no problem.

To combat this, maybe get rid of some things. You may want to make a backup prior to doing some deletions just in case you delete something you ended up wanting. Apps you don't use, multiple launchers, as some ROMs come with 3 or 4 of them. Corp Cal, Amazon mp3, e-mail, facebook, visual voicemail, google goggles among many others can be kinda useless if you use other apps or don't use them.

Ringtones is another way to get back some space. /system/media/*folders* . Root explorer will allow you to play the ogg files to see if you like the sound byte. I have noticed some larger ones in there sometimes.

If you don't want to take those steps and only want to theme market apps, you can resign them. [HOW TO] Manuals for creating a theme - xda-developers There are a couple posts (2 and 4 specifically) that kinda tell you how to resign apks. You then can reinstall them to data, like a normal market app. You will have to uninstall the current version prior, more than likely. Also, you will have to uninstall, before downloading market updates too. But...it works.

Awesome advice, thank you. I went back in and realized I could delete quite a few of the apks I was not using. Freed up a lot of space.

Yeah running jrummys .7 stock with the nextheme over the top. Runs awesome. I knew the full system/app folder wouldn't affect speed but I wanted some free space to play with.

yeah i figured that 5 row launcher takes up a hella lotta space and when you install over cyanogen it kinda writes 2 files and you end up running outta space to theme with

Here is my question, I have 27.6 MB left in my system app folder and do not plan to add anything else to it. If anything I will pull out the launcher2 which is 5MB and push Helix1 as my system launcher whick will give me about 30MB in my system app file
What I am wondering is if I push Google Earth in as a system app (it is 22MB) to clear up some space in my internal memory and only have 7 or 8mb in my system app folder is this going to slow my system down?

    Thanks in advance

No slowdowns you could have 0 space left in system and your phone wouldn't care. The system partition by default is read only, meaning nothing gets written there. Cache, data, sdcard, and other places are where the action takes place. I had it down to under 1mb left and noticed no performance difference.

Anytime I move the google earth.apk from my data app file to my system app file using root explorer it uninstalls the google earth.apk and when I reinstall it from the system app file it gets installed as a data app and not a system app

Does anyone know the su command to move something from the data app file to the system app file or am I just not doing something right

Mine already comes pretty packed but you should have atleast 5mb in system. The nex theme adds a whole bunch of ringtones which takes up a lot of space.

I figured it out, it is the same as if you were to push something using terminal from your sdcard to the system/app but instead of specifying "sdcard" you replace that with data/app

I love speaking Android with myself
