So how do we install these themes? Does the phone need to be rooted or there is a specific app for them?

Ok. I found this link for rooting the Moto Droid 2.1-update1:

How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid

Is there anything special to do after rooting the phone to install themes?

Some custom roms come with themes, and there's a program called Metamorph that is used for theming. I'd do some research in the hacking section of the forum to see if there's anything that strikes your fancy

So I root the device, then copy the themes to the SD card? I'm not drawing any parallels in my mind on the exact process here... sorry.

    Steps to installing themes:
    1. Root your phone
    2. Celebrate the fact you did not brick your phone.
    3. Nandroid back-up your stock rooted 2.1
-insert ROM/kernal installation procedures here , if you so choose-
    4. Download MetaMorph from the market and install
    5. Go into settings->about phone and check build number (ESE** or ERE**)
    6. Pick your theme based on the build number
    7. Download the .zip file for the theme and move to /sdcard/androidthemes
    8. Open up metamorph, allow it to run its checks.
    9. Choose unzip new theme
    10. After unzip, choose select extracted themes and choose the theme
    11. Install the theme (use delay setting greater or equal to the programs stock settings)
    12. Celebrate you installed your first theme
    13. Nandroid backup new theme just incase something were to happen.

    And your done!

Thanks rustynail09! That's what I needed to help me get it right. As of now the phone is rooted and backed up and installing a theme. That's the longest part it seems. lol.

Ok, how long does it take to install themes? I downloaded the 928 Black theme and followed the directions above. Well it started about 50 minutes ago and its still working on installing the framework-res.apk theme (file 26 of 26). Is that normal?

Kill the install of the framework-res, exit metamorph, menu->settings->applications->development, make sure usb debugging is turned on and re-install framework-res, then allow it to reboot

ahh, that's not true. It depends on the theme you are looking for. While there are many variations to changing graphics, icons, backgrounds, etc to create a theme there are themes for phones that are not rooted as well.

Sweeter Home is a home replacement app/launcher in the market, as an example. There is a learning curve, but the same is true for rooting, theming, manipulating graphics etc for rooted phones.

    Screenshots here (and elsewhere) :

    !

search Youtube, or the rest of the web, for more details. I just felt it worth mentioning that those with stock phones have lots to play with without worrying about voiding their warranty, bricking their phone, etc.
