Strange things happening

I am new to the Droid having come over from the iphone so this may or may not be a problem. When I get a new email notification, if I don't check my mail right away, I get another notification about 5 or 10 minutes later. Is this normal?

Also, on my wife's Droid, she is getting a notification tone but when she checks her Droid, there is no notification icon. Has anyone had this happen to them?
