I upgraded to SS 5.4 and today used Google Navigation for about an hour. The phone got VERY hot and stopped charging. I have to use my navigation next week for a vacation that will have the phone on for 10 hours and I'm concerned that the phone won't last that long.

Any recommended settings to keep the phone running cool?

    So additional facts:
    • It was mounted on the dash, but had not had this problem before going to SS.
    • The governor is set on Smartass.
    • The screen is set to auto.
    • The phone doesn't run hot when not using navigation.

Well, that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but it's possible you might get better results with a different kernel. Try a medium voltage first as those are more stable. It might be a PITA but download a bunch of Chevy's kernels and try each one.

Same thing here until I went to the 1.2lv. Just ran it for three hours with music - no problems.

Another thing, set cpu has profiles to force a speed decrease as temperature equals x...

And don't bother with the smartass governor...it'll only clock down to 550 no matter what, regular interactive or ondemand is better

I use my navigation daily and have had a few freezes but nothing unusual. Mine charges fine and doesn't get abnormally hot. I'm running the stock kernel set at 600 max using ondemand.

I had heat issues using navigation, or when streaming large amounts of data (I.e. netflix). It all went away when I switched to the ulv .8 kernel. Tried many others, but my phone likes this one best. Cool as can be now, and battery life is amazing.

    Good luck.

I'm in the same boat as you, been experimenting with kernels now. I think my phone is getting picky about lower voltage kernels now, going to try some of the medium voltage ones this week.

I'm sure these phones are just like anything else they get old and worn, meaning the processor can't quite handle what it might have at first

My droid hates ulv kernals, I can only have low voltage or medium voltage, if I try to push a ulv the results are horrible, bad battery life, bad screen redaws, freezing up, frequent reboots at random, phone gets extremely hot, all which is kernal related, either the kernal isn't meshing good with the rom, or the kernel isn't meshing with your phone. Mine was my phone didn't like the kernal.

I think I'm in this same boat, I used to run ulv 1.25's 6 months ago, now the phone won't even run on them, will boot but grind to a halt quickly, had to step all the way up to medium voltage kernels

This same thing happened to me yesterday. I used the navigation for about an hour and my CPU temp was about 140 F which was unusual. I was running a 0.9 ulv kernel onDemand. Then my phone just stopped charging even though my battery was at 70%. So I ended up lowering the clock speed to 400mhz and still experienced the high heat. I tried a 0.9 lv voltage kernel and still the same issue and it takes forever ever to cool down. This has never happened to me before.

Might want to start over and do a clean rom install. You shouldn't be having those problems.

That's what I was thinking. I have been running this since 05/31 with no issues so I thought it couldn't be a bad download but it doesn't hurt to try and see what happens. I just have been having very bad heat issues and no kernel seems to help. I have even tried 0.8 ulv to see if it would help and the phone would stay cool but become unresponsive after a while. I really love this ROM so I will try everything to make it work right.

Yeah, I'm thinking at this point it's not a kernel issue, but don't give up. This is a great rom.

The next time I try Navigator I'm going to change my screen settings to a low level rather then auto. Maybe that is part of the problem (e.g. having the screen on bright [auto] for an hour is adding to the heat problem).

I would even suggest clocking down to say 600 when running nav ... do you have heat problems when running nav ONLY? Or in general?

I have not had any overheating problems with just charging the phone or with normal use. It's when navigator is running. The problem doesn't appear to be isolated to this ROM as I have seen similar comments/questions.

I'm going to try to clock it down and reduce the screen and see what happens.
