I just saw a commercial for the g2 and they showed the mic and said "listen to..." then it started playing music. Is this part of an app or part of the os?

It's an App in the Market called Voice Search.

A little of both. The actual 'listen to. . .' command is included in Froyo, however it needs a compatible music app to work. Apparently the music app included with the Droid X isn't. I get a message telling me I need a compatible music app.

The music app bundled with the G2 might be different. If not there is sure to be a few to choose from in the Market.
